Room with PC and Cable Modem Print

This scenario adds a PC to an Avcast network, and includes a Cable Modem and a broadband connection to the Internet. There are two wiring options in this case. Often, the cable company will split the cable coming to your house and run a dedicated coax cable to the Cable Modem. If this is the case, the remainder of the wiring is identical to the scenario above, "Room with PC". However, if you would like to be able to put the PC and Cable Modem in any room, the wiring is a bit more complicated.

The CableCaster replaces the splitter where Cable TV or antenna signals enter the home. A notch filter eliminates unwanted signals from the antenna or Cable TV service (you specify filter range). Notice, however, that now the incoming cable connects to one of the four "Net" ports of the CableCaster. This allows a back channel through the CableCaster to the broadband Internet Service Provider. Had the incoming cable been connected to the CATV/Antenna port of the CableCaster, all reverse signals would be blocked. Notice also a DOCSIS Reverse Channel Amplifier at the new input of the CableCaster. This does two things: it amplifies the signals going back to the Internet Service Provider; and it prevents (filters) other signals (i.e. Personal TV Channels) from leaving the home and traveling to the cable company.

The PC in Room 1 is added to the Avcast network with a MediaCaster. The MediaCaster will accept the Audio output from your sound card and the Video output from your Video Out (TV Out). Once attached to the PC, the MediaCaster is set to a "Personal TV Channel", say channel 78. Any TV tuned to channel 78 will be able to view what is being played on the PC.

Note: Before you attach the MediaCaster, make sure you can view your PC screen on a TV via the Video Out connector. This may require adjusting some display settings in the Control Panel to enable the Video Out connector. You may also need an S-Video to RCA converter. Also note that since there are two devices needing the coax wall plate (the MediaCaster and the Cable Modem), a splitter/combiner is needed in Room 1. If you have three or more TVs in this scenario, it is allowable to split a cable from a CableCaster "Net" port to two or more TVs. In this case, the split cable is going to TVs in Rooms 2 and 3. Avcast works with splitters as long as they are DC passing splitters.
